A prayer for our neighbors who seek home and healing

The Long Beach Multi-Service Center rests at the point where the Los Ángeles River converges with Anaheim Street, one of the oldest and longest streets in southern Los Angeles County. Anaheim Street connected the Los Ángeles and San Gabriel Rivers after Long Beach was incorporated as a city in 1888, and was an important transportation route for early settlers throughout southern California. Today, these rivers continue serving as bridge, and as a source of life and nourishment for many. What abundant riches we have inherited.

The sacred datura–a plant that finds its home along the Los Ángeles River and is used by Indigenous peoples as medicine—welcomes the entry to the Multi-Service Center, further pronouncing a shared mission to foster health and healing.

Taking a pause from the day’s good work, the barn swallow perches in a halo of hope, greeting all who arrive with neighborly love. She, too, has found a home along the Los Ángeles River. She stands in mutual support for the progress toward self-sufficiency for the ones who gather here to seek home.
