Treble | Tremble

Treble | Tremble, in collaboration with Luke Jaaniste, 2016. Performance at Grand Central Art Center, Santa Ana, CA

I met Australian Sound Performance Artist Luke Jaaniste while he was on a site visit to prepare for his upcoming show at Grand Central Art Center, where I was working through my artist residency. During his time here, we discussed war and freedom, art and action, flow of sound. We sat at the piano together to share our methods, ideas, and inspirations. Just a couple of hours before his flight back home to Australia, we were able to squeeze this session in, an experiment with sound, movement, and the vibrations upon which they meet.

While Luke played this intuitive piano piece, using a line of symmetry upon which his agile fingers mirrored each other, I also worked from center, echoing this symmetry, allowing the sound and vibration to flow through my fingertips, and out in paint.  For me, this piece was the physical embodiment of letting go, of keeping centered, of finding and creating that meditative space, allowing the humming and swirling atmosphere to guide our hands.

It’s interesting to witness what can happen when the artists are taken out of the equation, allowing for the movement of the art forms to speak for and among themselves.
